The conservation challenge is that Elephants eat small-scale farmers’ crops which are often the only food available in rural communities. This conflict between farmers and elephants leads to heated battles, with death and injury often occurring on both sides. In addition poor people cannot afford to be conservationists without some support. This enterprise provides a cash crop income to poor rural communities by producing chili products using chilies grown by these farmers. Elephant pepper trains farmers to use non-lethal chili deterrents rather than injuring or killing elephants.
