Produced with care and respect for our culture and nature, Andean products improving livelihoods of the communities in Simiatug

Bio:

Simiatug is a vast territory located in the Western Cordillera behind the highest volcano in Ecuador, the 'Taita' (father) Chimborazo, the father of all Ecuadorian hills and mountains. This volcano has a lot of history and life that has evolved along with the humans who have lived here.

Due to climate conditions, topography and great distances to markets, life conditions are tough. This reality has led to social and commercial exploitation throughout our history, and to the development of precarious conditions within our families.

In the 1990s us women began to organize to improve our livelihoods out of the resources we have, processing them in our organization Simiatug SAMAI (meaning “the spirit of Simiatug”) and selling the finished products ourselves. What we have in our families are: artisanal talents, crops and fruits from Pachamama (mother Earth), our animals and our work force, which is always communal. We always work in groups, in families, women's groups, popular organizations and communities, in associations. Hence, our work is done in line with work nowadays also called Popular and Solidarity Economy and Fair Trade and acting through value chains.

The vast majority of us women of the region-Simiatug are -Kichwa Indigenous living in 38 communities from the highlands at 4000mt down to the humin rainforests at 2000mt. Our diverse origin highlights our unique historical roots.
