Organic raw sugar (panela) from small Ecuadorian producers. Commercialising under fair trade principles

Bio:

COPROPAP is formed by 21 farmer partners. Each partner owns a small plantation of sugarcane and necessary machinery for the extraction of sugar. Each of these plantations is managed by the family partner of the cooperative, which in turn hire as well labor paying fair wage, thus creating jobs and improving the standard of living of these families.

There are currently over 700 people involved in the development of panela, benefiting from higher prices obtained by the criteria of Fair Trade. Benefits include paying higher wages to workers, financing the community school and maintaining a dental center for the Community. With the support of NGOs COPROPAP obtained organic certification for farms in 1998, plus plans for continuous improvement of product quality and constant training for employees.
